Gauge, in plain terms

.019 is the thinnest aluminum sold as gutter. It dents under a ladder, it oil-cans on long runs, and hail dimples it. It's on a lot of newer subdivision homes in O'Fallon, St. Peters and Wentzville because it's what a builder's allowance covers.

.027 is a real step up. .032 is what we recommend on anything where a ladder is going to touch it or where the runs are long.

Finish

Baked-enamel coil is finished at the factory before it's ever rolled into gutter, so the color goes on flat and even under controlled conditions. It holds far better than field-painted aluminum, which is why old gutters chalk out to gray and new ones don't.

There are over twenty stock colors. Most people match trim; some match the roof.

Life expectancy in this climate

Twenty to twenty-five years is the honest range for St. Louis. What kills aluminum here isn't corrosion, it's the freeze-thaw cycle working the metal at hanger points and the seams at the corners letting go.

Standing water shortens it. So does a gutter that's been carrying a season's worth of wet leaves every year.

Against the alternatives

Steel is stronger but rusts, so it's a specialty choice. Copper lasts generations and costs like it. Vinyl is cheap, gets brittle in cold, and sags in heat — we don't install it.

For 90 percent of homes here, .032 aluminum is the right answer and nothing else is close on value.

Questions people ask

How long do aluminum gutters last?

Twenty to twenty-five years in the St. Louis climate, longer if they're kept clear and the pitch is right.

Do aluminum gutters rust?

No. Aluminum oxidizes rather than rusting, and the baked-enamel finish protects the surface.

What gauge do you install?

.027 standard, .032 recommended. Never .019.

Can aluminum gutters be painted later?

They can, though a properly finished coil rarely needs it. Prep matters — paint on unprepared aluminum peels.
