The mechanism

Warm attic air heats the roof deck. Snow on the heated section melts. The water runs down to the eave, which overhangs unheated space and stays below freezing, and it refreezes there.

The ice builds into a ridge. Meltwater backs up behind it, finds its way under the shingles, and comes through the ceiling. That ceiling stain in February is the actual damage.

What the gutter does

It collects the ice, which is heavy enough to bend the front lip, unseat hangers, and occasionally pull a whole run off the fascia.

So the gutter takes the beating, which is why people call a gutter company. But removing the gutter wouldn't stop the dam — the ice would just form on the roof edge instead.

What actually works

Air sealing the attic floor so warm air isn't leaking up. Adequate insulation depth. Working soffit intake and ridge exhaust so the attic stays close to outdoor temperature.

That's a roofing and insulation conversation, and John Beal Roofing handles it. Blocked soffit vents — usually insulation shoved into the eaves — are the single most common cause we find.

What doesn't

Gutter guards. They don't stop ice and some designs make removal harder.

Chipping ice out of a gutter. It damages the gutter and often the shingles, and the dam reforms in the next cycle.

Heat cable is a band-aid. It can keep a channel open through a bad winter, but it's treating the symptom and it runs up an electric bill doing it.

Questions people ask

Do gutters cause ice dams?

No. Attic heat loss does. Gutters just catch the ice that results.

Will gutter guards prevent ice dams?

No product on a gutter prevents an ice dam. The fix is in the attic.

Can ice damage my gutters?

Yes — ice is heavy enough to bend the front lip, pull hangers, and detach a run from the fascia.

Should I remove ice from my gutters?

Not by chipping. You'll damage the gutter and the roof edge. Address the attic before the next winter.
